Rosemary Suggate our treasurer and archivist will write about St Thomas Church
The present church of St Thomas was consecrated on 8th April 1938.Hundreds of people came, but there were only seats for 420.
When the Bishop knocked on the door to be let in, many others tried to squeeze in with him, but were stopped by the police.
After the choir and clergy had processed around the church some more were allowed in to stand at the back. But there were still hundreds left outside.
In his address, the Bishop said the church was the first to be consecrated in the Diocese for several years and that the building was a worthy one for its purpose.
From that date onwards St Thomas the Apostle,Ipswich, became a seperate parish. Before this it had been attached to All Saints,Chevalier Street
